Gai Waterhouse is an icon in Australian racing; one of the most successful horse trainers in this country. A 15-year apprenticeship with her legendary horse trainer father Tommy (TJ) Smith gave her the invaluable experience of organising and effectively running a major racing stable that now houses up to 150 horses in full work.

Gai became the first Australian female trainer and the second female trainer to officially win the Melbourne Cup with Fiorente in 2013.

Gai has been honoured with the Westpac Business Owner Award and in 2000 she was named the state’s top businesswoman as the Telstra NSW Businesswoman of the Year. In her stellar career, Gai has reached incredible heights with three NSW Training Premierships, seven Sydney Trainer’s Premierships and multiple racing industry awards. In 2000, Gai was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for “outstanding contribution to thoroughbred racing” and in October 2018, inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

In 2021, Gai was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) and is one of only three racing entities across the nation to be awarded this distinguished title.

In 2023 Gai made history as she joined her late father in receiving the highest possible accolade, being elevated to Legend Status at the Australian Racing Hall of Fame Ceremony.
