Luke Bateman is an Australian writer, podcaster and cultural commentator whose story spans professional sport, rural Australia, recovery and the evolving conversation around masculinity, identity and mental resilience.
A former Canberra Raiders NRL player, Luke retired from professional rugby league in 2020 and returned to rural Western Queensland. There, the isolation and vastness of country life sparked a renewed passion for reading and writing, and ultimately set him on a new path as a writer and public voice.
Today, Luke is known for his candid and thoughtful conversations about mental health, addiction recovery, gambling, relationships, vulnerability and modern masculinity. Through his writing, podcast In The Good Books and rapidly growing digital audience, he brings together intellectual curiosity and lived experience to explore the stories, ideas and cultural forces that shape how we understand ourselves and one another.
Luke is also an author with a three-book publishing deal with Simon & Schuster for an upcoming fantasy series. In 2026, he appeared on Network 10s Im a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, reaching the Grand Finale and finishing in the Top 3 while raising funds and awareness for rural charity Farm Angels. His journey was also explored in an episode of ABCs Australian Story.
Drawing on his own experiences of sport, addiction, recovery and personal transformation, Luke speaks with honesty, warmth and clarity about what it means to rebuild your identity, embrace vulnerability and create meaningful change.
