In the history of the National Basketball League, few names loom larger than Brian Goorjian. The most successful coach in NBL history, Goorjian has coached more games and won more championships than any other coach in the competition.

Landing in Australia in 1977 to play for Lindsay Gaze and the Melbourne Tigers, Goorjian was an inaugural member of the Tigers’ NBL team in 1984.

After retiring as a player, Goorjian moved into coaching and went on to forge an extraordinary career spanning four decades. Since taking his first NBL Head Coach role in 1988, he has coached more than 870 games, recorded almost 600 wins and led his teams to a record seven NBL Championships. In 2026, he added another milestone to his remarkable career, being named Lindsay Gaze NBL Coach of the Year for a record seventh time.

Goorjian was also the first coach to deliver three consecutive Championships, leading the Sydney Kings to three titles from 2003 to 2005.

His success at national level led to an extensive international coaching career. As Head Coach of the Australian Boomers, Goorjian led Australia to gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and, years later, to its historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, the first Olympic medal won by the Australian men’s basketball team.

His international coaching experience extends across Asia. Goorjian has served as an Assistant Coach with the Chinese and Japanese National Teams and spent more than a decade coaching in China’s elite CBA competition, working with some of the league’s leading clubs.

His international career also took him to the Philippines, where he was Head Coach of the Bay Area Dragons competing in the Philippine Basketball Association, leading the team to a Grand Final series.

After more than a decade coaching internationally, Goorjian returned to the NBL, initially with the Illawarra Hawks before returning to the Sydney Kings as Head Coach. In 2026, he led the Kings to the NBL Championship, securing his record seventh title and further cementing his legacy as the greatest coach in NBL history.

Across more than three decades at the highest levels of professional sport, Brian Goorjian has built a career around leadership, culture, resilience, high performance and creating teams capable of sustained success. His experience offers powerful insights into what it takes to lead people through pressure, build winning cultures and achieve extraordinary results over the long term.
